Helen Buchanan, University of Cape Town

Associate professor, Division of Occupational Therapy, Dept. of Health & Rehabilitation Sciences

Dr Helen Buchanan is an associate professor in the Department of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences at the University of Cape Town (UCT). Helen is an occupational therapist with a special interest in practice learning and education. Her scholarship in this area began with her involvement in a collaborative research project with the UCT Writing Centre and the Centre for Higher Education Development (CHED) to develop writing formats to develop clinical reasoning. She subsequently co-edited a book “Practice and Service Learning in Occupational Therapy: Enhancing potential in context”. Her current research activities include student experiences of their first practice learning placement, and using digital stories to describe the process of professional identity formation during practice learning.
